The Virginia Department of Social Services mission statement is "People helping people triumph over poverty, neglect and abuse." A powerful statement which deserves a powerful presence on the web. As I mention on the intranet page, when I joined the organization their web developer had abandoned them, leaving a major hole in the public affair's division. I was initial brought on to assist him in design and development efforts; however, due to his departure I was now lead. I felt the same pressure with this site as the intranet site as I put forth my best efforts to address the backlog of updates requested by the agency.
Once the backlog was addressed, I could focus on my true wizardry of site design. The current site design was created during another era, when staying above the fold was the primary concern and mobile was not. Today's audience expect every site to be mobile friendly and have an in your face presentation to capture and focus the user's attention. The new design employs a massive use of powerful imagery to capture the audience's eye. Also, through site metrics, the most used areas of the site have been brought forward to increase the ease of use of the site.
My goal for this site is to not only redesign it for our user's experience, but to also bring the department beyond the current design standards and place it a position that others will copy. As they say "...to copy is the greatest flattery..." and that is where I want this site to be.
